Once poured at the correct temperature, the plates are vacuum sealed ready for shipping. Please use the options to create your ideal plates. Plates are vacuum sealed for dispatch. Why are agar plates important?
Agar plates are important in mycology to help minimise the risk of contamination. Spores are generally dirty they grow in unsterile conditions and are collected in unsterile conditions, they often grow in manure and there is always a chance of your spore syringe being contaminated. For this reason, we drop a few droplets from the spore syringe onto the plate to see if it grows clean. If it grows clean then you can transfer the clean growth straight into your spawn.
How to?
This should be done inside a still air box (SAB) or in front of a laminar flow hood purely because you are trying to reduce the chances of contamination. Simply shake your syringe vigorously and then drop one or two drops onto the plate near the middle. The best item to seal them with is parafilm although masking tape will suffice. Within a few days you will see growth. If you see contaminants, it can still be saved, transfer some of the clean growth onto a new plate and it should grow clean. If it doesn’t, the contamination has happened due to something you are doing otherwise the second plate would be contaminated by now.
Please note there is a 3 day lead time due to the plates being made to order. It is normal for there to be a little condensation on the plates.
